Winning a competition feels incredible! It is a mix of great teamwork, relief and pride. We recently participated in the Idiom’s Competition held at Sharon School and here is our experience. After a wonderful vacation when we went to school on the first day, our class teacher told us that from now on  we will write five idioms daily. The teacher explained to us about idioms and their literal and figurative meanings. This was something new for us.

World of Idioms

Earlier this academic year, when we received the calendar, we had seen the competitions and were curious to know more about the Idiom Challenge. We were also eager to participate. When fifty idioms were completed in class, an elimination round quiz was  conducted. Forty three  students from classes VA and VB participated. We waited with anticipation to know if we had made the cut. When the teacher finally announced the names of the finalists we were in seventh heaven as we were on it. From there, finalists of both classes were merged and we were split across six groups, each group containing three players.

We waited with bated breath for the final round of the Quiz day held on 22nd December 2025. Finally that day came for what we were waiting for. We had  butterflies in our stomachs.  We could hear participants wish each other, “Break a leg!”

The Quiz started. There were a total of five rounds. The first round was the Visual Clue Round. We were shown an image and we had to guess the idiom. This was a fun way of recalling idioms like “spill the beans”, “in a pickle” and “a fish out of water” among others.

In the second round, the Charades Round, we were given an idiom and we had to act it out for our team. This was a bit unusual and challenging but ultimately we were able to crack idioms like “to pull someone’s leg”, “water under the bridge”. In hindsight these two rounds were easy. As the third round began the whole game changed. In this round the teacher read aloud a situation and we had to state a suitable idiom for the given context. Slowly, some teams began to be eliminated. We were sad about our friends who were eliminated. As the next round began we were also feeling scared and we had sweaty palms. This was the final round and a high stakes one – The Buzzer Round. The teacher read aloud an idiom and gave us multiple choice options to choose from. All teams took their time – we had all burnt the midnight oil and we had imagined this would be a cake walk! How wrong we were. Every team put their best foot forward, leading to a tough tie breaker round.

Finally the names of the winners were announced. Pearl’s team won the second prize Riya and Rian’s team won the first prize. The Idioms’Quiz was an interesting learning experience that enhanced our language skills and increased our interest in idioms.
